Myrl Mary Fagan Skahill - Burial - Mount Olivet Cemetery, Dubuque County, Iowa

This is an extract from Find A Grave.

Name: Myrl Mary Fagan Skahill

Skahill is a derivative of the Scahill name.

Birth: March 9, 1908

Place: Cascade, Iowa

Death: September 30, 2007

Place: Phoenix, Arizona

The following was published in the The Arizona Republic on October 2, 2007.

Myrl Mary Fagan Skahill of Phoenix, Arizona, passed away on September 30, 2007 at the age of 99. Myrl was born March 9, 1908 in Cascade, Iowa.

She graduated from St. Martin's High School in Cascade and attended Clarke College in Dubuque, Iowa. She left after three years because of the Depression. She taught in a one-room country school and later in East Cascade.

She married Orval Skahill on June 7, 1937, and they worked the Skahill family farm south of Cascade.

They and their two children, Joan and Earl, moved to Dubuque in 1950. Myrl and Orval enjoyed cooking and hosting out of town relatives and friends and boating with the family on the Mississippi River.

Orval died in a tractor accident on the Cascade farm in 1959.

Myrl, together with her mother, Margaret Fagan, would spend winters in Scottsdale and eventually moved to Arizona in 1962. She loved Arizona, loved to decorate, cook, sew, and delighted in welcoming winter visitors from the Midwest. In later years she suffered loss of vision due to macular degeneration and was forced to give up most of the activities she enjoyed.

She tried to stay active and find as much pleasure as possible in taking care of her home, her dog, "Beau", and being with friends and family.

Her 90th birthday was a memorable three-day celebration reuniting the extended family and friends. She had great stories to tell--of the Depression, life on the farm, the war years, the cold Midwest winters, even the Flu Pandemic of 1918 (she was 10 years old at the time). She also had many happy stories of picnics, fashions, movies, and dances in the Big Band era. Her memory and mind remained sharp.

Myrl was also preceded in death by her brother, Earl Fagan. She is survived by her children, Joan (Roger) Green of Sun City West, and Earl (Patty) Skahill of Indian Hills, Colorado.

Her grandchildren include Susan Green (Tony Rea) of Cave Creek, Arizona, Stephen Green of Phoenix, Stephen (Rebecca) Skahill of Washington, NC, Michael Skahill (Joanne) of Williamsburg, VA and Nathan (Cory) Skahill of Davenport, Iowa and eight great grandchildren.

Services will be held on Thursday, October 4th at 10 am at St. Paul's Catholic Church, 330 W. Coral Gables Dr., Phoenix. Visitation will be open to all friends at Hansen Chapel, 8314 N. 7th St. on Wednesday, October 3rd from 5 to 8 pm, Rosary at 7 pm.

Burial Mass will be celebrated at the Cathedral of Saint Raphael in Dubuque, Iowa with burial at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Benedictine Monks, St. Benedict's Abbey, Benet Lake, WI 53102.
