The Sixteenth United States Census, conducted by the Census Bureau, determined the resident population of the United States to be 132,164,569, an increase of 7.3 percent over the 1930 population of 123,202,624 persons. The census date of record was April 1, 1940. A number of new questions were asked including where people were 5 years before, highest educational grade achieved, and information about wages. This census introduced sampling techniques; one in 20 people were asked additional questions on the census form. Other innovations included a field test of the census in 1939.

He was born on February 7, 1919 in Youngstown, to the late John Joseph and Ellen "Nellie" (Barry) Scahill.
Mr. Scahill worked in the Steel Mills in the Mahoning Valley, in the 1950s he was employed at the Islay's Dairy in Youngstown, the Prudential Life Insurance Company, The Atlantic and Pacific (A&P) Meat Warehouse in Youngstown and then moved to the plant in Salem. When he retired, he worked for the Salem Public Library until three years ago.
Mr. Scahill was a veteran of World War II and served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the American Legion Post # 56 in Salem, the VFW Post # 892 in Salem, a life Member of the Buckeye Division of the 37th. Division of Veterans Association. A member of St. Paul's Catholic Church where he served as the 4:30 PM Mass usher.
He is survived by his wife, the former Elizabeth Jane Gaut whom he married on March 7, 1942.
Also survived by a daughter, Mrs. David (Kathleen Anne) Roberts of West Chester, Ohio, two sons, Thomas J. and Melody A. Scahill of Salem, John W. Scahill of Evergreen, CO., two sisters, Eileen McElhaney and Mrs. David (Margaret) Rexroad both of Hubbard, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of his life will be held on Thursday at 10:30 AM at the Arbaugh-Pearce-Greenisen Funeral Home in Salem and a 11:00 AM Mass At St. Paul's Catholic Church.
A time of Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 6 to 8 PM and on Thursday from 9:30 to 10:30 AM. At the funeral home. A prayer service will be held at 7:45 PM Wednesday.
The Salem Amvets Post # 45 and VFW Post # 892 will provide full military honors at Grandview Cemetery.
Memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of the Valley or St. Paul's Catholic Church.
