Skahill Names On The Griffiths Valuation Of Ireland 1848-1864

Skahill is a derivative of the Scahill name.

Ireland's Valuation office conducted it's first survey of property ownership in Ireland from 1848 to 1864.

This survey became known as the Griffiths Valuation, after Richard Griffith, who was the director of the office at that time.

The survey was used to determine the amount of tax each person should pay towards the support of the poor within their poor law union. This involved determining the value of all privately held lands and buildings in rural, as well as urban areas, to figure the rate at which each unit of property could be rented year after year.

The resulting survey was arranged by barony and civil parish with an index to the townland's appearing in each volume.

Griffith's Valuation can be used as an excellent census substitute for the years after the Great Famine as censuses prior to 1901 were destroyed.

This record and many others can be found at the
Fáilte Romhat web site.

The original recorder abbreviated differently, sometimes by
raising the last letter above the rest (which was indicated by
^ before the raised letter), and sometimes by giving the first few
letters of the word. He was NOT
consistent in their use.
He abbreviated some 3-letter words, and wrote out 8-letter words, etc.

216 The original recorder left her forename blank, his straight
line might have indicated another Margaret.

Pool Tournament 2007

The Bragging Rights Trophy.

Way back in 1994, four friends got together for the first of many tournaments.

These friends had played each other many times before, but this was the first time a trophy was involved.

The scene. Boston Billiards. The contenders for the 2007 Bragging Rights trophy from left to right: Wayne, Bill, George and Allan.

Bill had been the holder of the trophy for the last couple of years. It has been that long since we all got together for a game.

That's me, Allan. Game face on and sizing up my next shot.

The winner of the 2007 Bragging Rights trophy is George.
Congratulation buddy. You kicked butt.

George is being presented the trophy by Bill.

It is always fun to get together, play pool and shoot the breeze. After all it's the playing that is most important, not the winning... :-)

Two Old Friends In Town From Trinidad

We had a visit from a couple of old friends. George and Gail Lamb.

This photograph is of Gail and Gloria.

I worked with George for over 20 years at a petrochemical company. The company's name when we both started was Alberta Gas Chemicals, then it became Novacor Chemicals and finally Methanex.

George is still with Methanex, but is now working for them at their plant in Trinidad. Both Gloria and myself are hoping to visit them in late February early March of this year.

We had a meal and a couple of drinks with them at a local watering hole.

Front Row: Debra and Gloria,
Middle Row: Bill and Gail.
Back Row: George and Allan.

Whenever George is in town, we get together for a pool tournament, and see who has the bragging rites for the next couple of years. Our tournament is going to be played at Boston Billiards on Thursday evening.
